Mileage Deduction Calculator

Your miles, your rate, your deduction.

The mileage deduction is your business miles multiplied by the standard rate for that tax year. Commuting between home and a regular workplace does not count. If one vehicle does both jobs, your business-use percentage is business miles divided by total miles. Enter yours below. Nothing is stored and nothing is sent.

Trips for work. Not commuting.
Optional. Used for business-use percentage.

Reference, verify before use:

Business use
40.0%
Total miles
10,500

Check the rate before you file. The standard mileage rate is set per tax year and changes annually, and medical, moving and charitable driving are deducted separately at much lower rates. Confirm the current figure with the IRS or your accountant. This calculator does the arithmetic on the numbers you give it. It is not tax advice.

What counts as a business mile?

Travel between two places of work, to a client or customer, to a temporary work site, to collect supplies, or to the bank or post office on business. Those miles are deductible.

Travel between home and a regular place of work is commuting, and commuting is not deductible however far it is. Personal errands are not deductible either, even when they happen in the middle of a working day.

If the same vehicle does both, you need the split. That is what the business-use percentage above is: business miles divided by total miles. Logging personal miles is not wasted effort, it is what makes the business figure defensible.

What a mileage log has to show

Date, starting point, destination, purpose and the miles. Tax authorities expect the record to be kept at or near the time of travel: a log reconstructed months later is the first thing an audit questions. That is the practical argument for logging as you go rather than rebuilding a year from memory in April.

Method, and how to cite this

Method: deduction = business miles × rate per mile. Business use = business miles ÷ (business miles + personal miles). No rate is assumed; the rate is the one you enter.

Want this kept for the whole year?

This page works out one number. The Mileage Tracker keeps the log behind it: every trip with its date, purpose and odometer readings, the business-use split calculated for you, and a flag when a trip is written up more than seven days late.

If the mileage is one part of a bigger return, the Schedule C spreadsheet takes the deduction total straight through, and the Business Expense Tracker covers the fuel, parking, tolls and repairs that sit alongside it.
